Cuevas del Campo lies in the Altiplano region of Granada, and is transformed into the Jerusalem of Biblical times on the afternoon of Good Friday. It stages a performance of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, according to St Matthew the Evangelist.
500 locals are transformed into actors and actresses to play their part in this spectacle that attracts thousands of tourists each year.
On the streets of Cuevas del Campo the scenes from the Passion of Christ, from his trial before Pontius Pilate to the crucifixion (obviously a safe version without nails) is acted out.
The smallest detail is taken care of during this dramatic play. Entire families work all year long to make costumes and props, made on a limited budget but with a lot of imagination.
Cuevas del Campo has a population of 2300 people and is located in the north-eastern part of the Granada, about 130 kilometres from the capital. It is situated between the mountain ranges of Baza and Cazorla, in an area known as the Hoya de Baza or the Altiplano de Granada.
On the streets of Cuevas del Campo the scenes from the Passion of Christ are re-enacted. Scenes include the time of His trial before Pontius Pilate to His crucifixion (obviously without real nails), and the three times He fell.
