Holy Week in Motril
12 brotherhoods, 23 floats and 6000 members take part in the Holy Week processions in Motril. The start on Palm Sunday and end on Easter Sunday. The streets are busy, bursting with activity and religious fervour as the brotherhoods pass by.
Holy Week in Motril dates back to the year 1600, the year in which the Cofradía de la Vera Cruz was created. Later, in 1635, the Cofradía de Jesús Nazareno and in the 19th century the Cofradía de Santo Sepulcro. During the 1940s and the 1980s, the other brotherhoods also started taking part in the processions.
After the Spanish Civil War, the ancient brotherhoods were forced to build up their wealth again. The makers of religious images in Granada are responsible for making the images that adorn the churches in Motril: Martínez Olalla (Nazareno y Virgen de la Esperanza) and Sánchez Mesa (Jesús Preso, Gran Poder, Cristo Yacente, Buena Muerte).
During the 1980s, six new brotherhoods were formed, making 12 in total. They are the Virgen de la Misericordia y San Juan Evangelista, by González Ventura from Seville; Cristo de Pasión by Barbero Gor; Cristo Resucitado by Dubé de Luque; Dulce Nombre de Jesús y Virgen del Valle by González Jurado from Córdoba; Cristo de la Expiración, by the artist from Malaga, Raúl Trillo.
The processions have their particular draw. There is the special way of carrying the float with the canopy of la Victoria, and the Gregorian Miserere, Perdón y Misericordia on Holy Tuesday is unique, as is the popular adoration of the Cristo Agustino de la Salud on Holy Wednesday. The sober (and possibly finest) image of Jesús del Gran Poder by Sánchez Mesa is fantastic, and the silent procession of El Silencio, during the early hours of Good Friday, is very moving. The procession of the Santo Sepulcro, with the beautiful Virgen de los Dolores de Antonio Illanes also takes place on Good Friday.

The Dulce Nombre de Jesús procession in the morning of Easter Sunday is unique. It is a procession made up of children carrying a beautiful image of Jesus in the act of blessing, accompanied by crowd of children waving white clay bells.
