Holy Week in Guadix

These Holy Week celebrations date back to the 1500s. Fifteen brotherhoods parade through the streets carrying images of great historical and artistic importance.

Although the cathedral is the focus of the emotion during this important week, many different parts of town are filled with saetas (traditional songs), tears, prayers, music and incense.

Hermandad de la Entrada Triunfal de Jesús en Jerusalén

Created in 1954, its headquarters are based at the Iglesia de San Miguel. It has around 280 members. The tunics members wear are pale blue with red buttons, tassels, capes and hoods, with white gloves and black shoes. The image was made in 1952, in the Santa Rufina y Eras workshop in Olot.

Cofradía de Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Salud en su Prendimiento y María Santísima de la Estrella

This brotherhood was established in 1996, and it is one of the youngest brotherhoods in the town. It is based at the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Fátima. It has 600 members. The tunics and hoods the members wear are white. They have blue buttons, tassels and blue capes. The image of the Mystery is by José Miguel Tirao Carpio, and the image of the Virgin is by David Valenciano.

Cofradía del Santísimo Cristo de la Misericordia y Virgen de los Dolores

On Holy Monday only the Cristo de la Misericordia goes on procession, replaced by the Virgen de los Dolores on Friday. It is believed that the image dates back to 1771, although some sources indicate it is a century older. The tunics worn during this procession are black with a raffia tassel, and all the participants carry lanterns. During the Virgin’s procession the tunics and capes are black, but the hood, tassels and gloves are white. It has about 500 members. The float of the Christ is made of wood while the image of the Virgin is adorned with black velvet embroidered with gold. The gold work is by Angulo de Lucena. This procession is accompanied by the Guadix municipal music band. The image of the Christ is Baroque in style dating back to the 17th century, with a heavy Italian influence.

Muy Antigua Cofradía y Hermandad de Penitencia del Santísimo Cristo de la Flagelación y María Santísima del Refugio

This Brotherhood dates back to the 1700s and is based in the Iglesia de Santa Ana. It has about 500 members. The tunics members wear are fuchsia with white capes, and the women wear their traditional mantillas. The image of the Christ is attributed to Diego de Vera, disciple of Pablo de Rojas. The Virgen del Refugio is a piece by Francisco Romero Zafra.

Cofradía de Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza

It was founded in 1951 in the Parroquia del Sagrario, funded by bank employees. It has about 600 members. The tunics members wear are made of green velvet, with white capes and hoods. The image of the Virgin has an aged face and hands. It was made by Benito Barbero, who joined these pieces to a candleholder, according to the information acquired when it was restored in 1992.

Hermandad del Santo Vía-Crucis, Santísimo Cristo de los Favores, Nuestra Señora de la Humildad, Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Sentencia y Dulce Nombre de Jesús

Even though the origins of the Brotherhood date back to the beginning of the 16th century. It only first went out on procession in 1978. The tunics members wear are black and beige. It has approximately 500 members. The images of the Señor de la Sentencia were made by the workshop in Olot, the crucifix was made by Pinto Barraquero from Jerez, based on an engraving of an earlier version. The Virgen de la Humildad is by Torcuato Ruiz del Peral, one of the great masters of the Granada School, and dates back to the 18th century.

Hermandad de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno “El Llavero” y Nuestra Señora de la Consolación, Madre de la Iglesia

This Brotherhood dates back to the mid-17th century and is based at the Parroquia de Santiago. The name El Llavero (which means the keyholder) comes from a miraculous event attributed to the figure of Jesus, which in 1810 supposedly stopped the French troops from entering the Covento de las Clarisas when the Mother Superior put the keys in the sculpture’s hands. During the procession, the tradition is to give the keys to the figure of Christ. It has 400 members and the tunics the members wear are mauve, with purple and yellow tassels.

Muy Ilustre y Fervorosa Hermandad de Nuestro Padre Jesús del Soberano Poder y María Santísima de las Lágrimas.

This Brotherhood first took part in the processions in 1995. The tunics members wear are ivory coloured with a gold cuffs, gold cape and blue hoods and sashes. It has around 800 members. The image of the Virgen was made by Antonio Catillo Lastrucci in 1952, and the image of Nuestro Padre Jesus del Soberano Poder is by the sculptor Juan Manuel Miñarro.

Cofradía de Penitencia de Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Obediencia y María Santísima del Mayor Amor

The procession of this Brotherhood took place in 1993. The tunics members wear are black with trains, raffia belts, black hoods and Franciscan sandals. The images of the Lord and the Virgin are by the sculptor Bonilla Cornejo.

Hermandad del Santísimo Cristo de La Luz y María Santísima de la Amargura

This Brotherhood was re-founded in 1942 and has around 700 members. The tunics its members wear are black, with purple hoods, tassels and buttons. The image of the Cristo de la Luz was destroyed during the Civil War and in 1942 the sculptor Del Moral Herranz from Granada recreated the image using one arm and one leg from the original image. The statue of the Virgin is by the sculptor Romero Zafra from Cordoba.

Hermandad de San Juan Evangelista

Founded in 1693 this Brotherhood has 250 members. The tunics members wear are white, with red buttons, red belts, red capes and red hoods. The image is a work by an anonymous artist from the 12th century, from the School of Granada and the Círculo de los Moras. In his left hand St John holds a real palm branch.

Hermandad del Descendimiento del Señor

Ths first procession of this Brotherhood took place in 1959 and is based in the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Gracia. The tunics members wear are white, with a black capes and black sashes. It has about 450 members. The group of sculptures is made up of seven figures, representing Our Lord’s Descent from the Cross. The images are from the workshop in Olot, made by Manuel Sargueda.

Hermandad Sacramental del Santo Sepulcro

This Brotherhood dates back to the 16th century. Its procession starts from the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias. It has about 300 members. The tunics that are worn are white, with white buttons, white tassels and a Bordeaux-coloured cape. The image of the Lord was carved from the remains of a crucifix dating back to the 17th century.

Muy Antigua Hermandad de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad

This Brotherhood has almost 500 members. The tunics that members wear are black with yellow buttons and yellow hoods, and the black capes have yellow lining. The image of the Virgin is by Amadeo Ruiz Olmos from Córdoba, made from a beam from the old Iglesia de San Miguel.

Cofradía de Cristo Resucitado y Nues-tra Señora de la Victoria

This Brotherhood was founded in 1991. It has 250 members and the tunics members wear are white, with white capes and white hoods. The sculpture of Jesús Resucitado was made in the workshop in Olot, and the Virgen de la Victoria is by the sculptor Luis Sergio Torres.
