The Sierra Nevada is a perfect place to enjoy mountain excursions, especially in summer when there is less snow and weather conditions are better.

Those who want to walk up to the peaks can go on foot. However, you can also access the 3000 metre mark on ski lifts and with the SIAC (Service for Access to HighPeaks), both from the northern and southern slopes.

SERVICE FOR ACCESS TO HIGH PEAKS

The SIAC offers visitors guided tours in a small bus during the summer months. The guide explains the most important and interesting facts about the National Park and NaturalPark of the Sierra Nevada. It is a pleasant tour covering aspects of the history, environment, landscape and biology of the Sierra Nevada and, in particular, of the highest areas of the mountain range.

It is necessary to confirm opening hours, and dates and times of tours by telephone.

SIAC-Northern slope

The SIAC on the northern slope is part of Hoya de la Mora’s Área de Estancia y Control (hostel area). It is located on the old road to the Veleta at km 39, right in the heart of the mountain range. It spans to the area known as Posiciones del Veleta, where there is a splendid viewpoint over the Barranco del Río Guarnón gorge, where you can see the high majestic peaks of the north side of the Sierra Nevada and the surrounding mountains. From here you can take a number of routes – you can climb up the Veleta or theMulhacén (both of which can be done in just one day). These tours only take place during the summer.

On route the service stops in Puerto Molina, an exceptionally beautiful stopping point with views over the Barranco de Poqueira gorge and the Río Chico in Trevélez. From here you can also seethe beautiful view of the highest peaks on the southern side of the Sierra Nevada and its surrounding mountains. On very clear days it is even possible to see the Mediterranean Sea. From here you can take a number of routes – you can climb up the Mulhacén, which can be done in just one day.

These tours take place in spring, summer and autumn (from Holy Week to the beginning of December, depending on weather).

SKI RESORT LIFTS IN SIERRA NEVADA

The ski lifts run from the village of Pradollano (altitude 2200 metres) all the way up to an altitude of 3000 metres, close to the Veleta. During the summer (beginning of July to beginning of September) two lifts, a cable car and a chair lift are open. These lifts allow visitors to reach the area of the high peaks in just a few minutes and without any effort.

Starting from the top of the lift, you can enjoy some of the most rewarding and challenging mountain walks, particularly those that take you up the highest peaks.

The lifts are open in the summer months to allow visitors to enjoy a number of outdoor activities, such as walking, trekking and bicycle tours, as well as to simply enjoy the spectacular view from the 3000 metre mark.
