Olive oil has been produced in the area since the 16th century. The district lies in the Subbaetic mountain range in the province of Granada, that borders with provinces of Jaén and Córdoba to the North and the Vega de Granada to the South. The virgin olive oil has a fruity smell and taste. It is full bodied and slightly bitter. Two types are produced here: a light and fruity one and an intensely fruity one. The following olive varities are grown here: Picual (80%), Lucio and Loaime (15%), and Negrillo de Iznalloz, Escarabajuelo, Gordal de Granada and Hojiblanca (5%).
