This town is located at the edge of the slopes of the Río Genil and the Río Guadiana Menor, over the thousand metres above sea level. Despite this, the land is fertile and not very steep. This fantastic location and the hospitality of its people make it a haven of peace and tranquillity, ideal for nature lovers.

This peaceful corner used to be an old field full of dolmens, whilst today it is a large space used for the growing of olive trees and cereals. Another attraction of the town is its interesting history. Here, the archaeological site of El Pradillo is located, where a dolmen with human remains from 5,000 years ago was found. Traces of Arab culture have also been discovered as well as Roman ruins. In the town centre there is a mixture of architectural styles, including some contemporary buildings.

The remains found in the area suggest the existence of human settlements since Prehistoric times. These peoples include the Iberians, Romans, Visigoths and Muslims. First Gobernador was a farmstead and farmhouse during the Moorish occupation. This was a period of great prosperity and development for the area, which was a strategic place used to the defence of the kingdom.

At the end of this period, as it was a border area, it was target of many invasions and skirmishes by the Christians quartered in Cazorla before the Christian Reconquista began. After that, it was given to the governor (‘gobernador’ in Spanish) Francisco de Molina, from whom the place gets its name. After their rebellion, the Moors were expelled from the town. Decades later it was repopulated with settlers from other areas of the country and Christian churches were built.

Traditional local dishes include Migas de pan, which are consumed especially in the winter and usually served in the cortijos. Meat is also a popular ingredient, especially pork, accompanied by Gachas and Guisos de patata. The special local Easter pastries are absolutely delicious.
