This church dates back to the early 16th century. It was designed and built by Diego de Siloam. Of particular interest is the door of the sacristy and the Renaissance main entrance. Inside the church there is a fantastic Gothic vaulted ceiling and a Baroque choir.
In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI has declared the Iglesia Santa María la Mayor of Huéscar A Perpetual Jubilee Temple, like the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. It is the only church in the Diocese of Guadix that has an affiliation with the Pontifical basilica. All those people who make a pilgrimage to this church receive a Plenary Indulgence.
