The Virgen de la Cabeza, whose feast day is celebrated on the last Sunday of April, is very popular in El Altiplano. In Benamaurel the occasion is celebrated with splendid parades of Moors and Christians.
The locals put on spectacular costumes and parade through the streets following the beat of the music. Then a play, divided into two parts, is re-enacted. The play is spread out over a number of days, and the first interval comes with the partial victory of the Moors. The play ends with the final victory of the Christians and the conversion of the Moors to Christianity. The anonymous text used in Benamaurel (called The Captivity and rescue of Our Lady of La Cabeza) is very interesting and caught the attention of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas who financed an edition of the work.
The celebration also includes a procession of the image of the Virgin through the streets of the town before it reaches the town square and floral offerings are presented.
