In La Peza you will find the ruins of a castle built between the 9th and 10th centuries. It was a building of great importance during the Nasrid period, because it was used as a lookout point over the road that linked Guadix with Granada. In his historic visit to Granada in 1494, the German traveller Hieronymus Münzer described it as follows: ‘After three leagues we arrived at the Castle of Lapesa, on a high mountain, and rested there overnight. Everybody was Saracen, other than the warden and our host, who put us up at the foot of the mountain.’
