Alhama, the town that the Arab king was so sad to lose, was very popular already in the Roman period. Its thermal baths and the positive effect they had on the locals also made the town famous. This characteristic happiness can be seen at Carnival time. The celebration is known as ‘Carnestolendas’ and comes from the Roman Saturnales.

The popularity of the Carnival of Alhama is due to the fun that can be had here as well as the beautiful, historical city in which it is held. Its strange Murgas and Comparsas competition and the diversity and originality of the masks worn on the occasion make it really special. The highlight is the afternoon of the Domingo de Piñata, when hundreds of visitors arrive from different corners of Andalucía to take part.

This celebration has been officially declared a Festival of Touristic Interest in Andalucía.
