Tourist information

Located to the south of the Almijara Mountain range, in the margins of the Verde River, which divides the town in two neigbourhoods. The main tourist attraction, is its architectonic historical patrimony. Two constructions stand out: the Parochial Church of San Antonio and the hermitage of the Virgin of Bodíjar, patron of the place. The last Sunday of April, the Virgin is transferred in romería until its sanctuary that is 4 kilometres away from the town. This tradition goes back to centuries ago, because there are traces that already in the XVII century this romería was famous. Nowadays the celebration has become a religious-festival celebration with prays, songs and dances until dusk, in which the Virgin is transferred again to the Church of San Antonio.

The religious celebrations in honour of the Virgin Santísima of Bodíjar are celebrated from the 31 of December to the 2 of January.

Located in the head of the Bodíjar Ravine, from the Sanctuary, beautiful views of the surroundings, an authentic balcony opened to the valley of the Verde river and to the sea can be contemplated.

History

There is certainty of human settlements in the place from the Neolithic period, with burials in caves and abundant lithic and ceramic industry. Jete had contact with the civilizations that arrived through the sea, as it is the case of the Phoenicians. Nevertheless, the origin of the present settlement (documented) it has to be looked for it at Arab time, whose geographers speak already from the XI and XII centuries of Seth, Xet, Yeth (denomination who means border or shore) like a farmhouse pertaining to alfoz of Almuñécar. The Muslims appreciated their situation and their fertile soil. At this time it belonged to alfoz of Almuñécar. After the Christian conquest the war of the moriscs took place with its defeat and expulsion and soon was also threatened by the berberisc pirates. At the end of the XX century, Jete finally prospers thanks to tropical agriculture and the tourism that has been developed in the area.

Gastronomy

The Horacio Calvente Cellars produce one of best wines of the province. With new techniques and old grapevines planted in a high altitude it elaborates elegant red wines with noble varieties (merlot, cabernet sauvignon, tempranillo...) and white wines extraordinarily fruity with moscatel of Alexandria. The subtropical climate that the area enjoys, allowed at the end of the XIX century the tropical introduction of products such as cherimoyas, mangos, avocados and other fruits. The sausages and the rice is also part of the gastronomy of the place, next to choto al ajillo, migas of bread, the stew of hinojos, the papas a lo pobre and abundant pastry making, of which the fig bread, the garrapiñadas almonds, the varied cakes of chicharrones, mantecados and twisted rolls stand out. In addition, due to its proximity to the coast the fish can be enjoyed.
