Tourist information

It is located at the bottom of the Bodíjar Mountain range and only a few kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea. The existence of this settlement was testified in the XII century. It has an urban core of narrow streets with whitewashed houses and  balconies full of flowers. The main places of interest of the town are the Parochial Church Nuestra Señora del Carmen, the hermitage of the Virgen de la Salud and the fountain called  Carenata. Ítrabo is ideal to practice trekking and to enjoy nature, as well as place to stay for the tourism of sun and beach. There are two defined routes that leave from the town, the route of Leon  the African and the route of Al-Idrisi. Any of these two ways will take you to discover impressive views of the surroundings, where it predominates, in one side, the exuberant green of the cultivated areas and in the other the pines and eucalyptuses. In the month of August the religious celebrations in honour of the Virgin Santísima de la Salud are celebrated in Ítrabo.


History

Ítrabo was the place where old civilizations like the Phoenicians settle; but the period of maximum splendour came with the arrival of the Muslims, who knew how to take advantage of their agricultural resources. When the time of confrontations with the Christian forces passed, the conquest caused a social instability that caused the expulsion of the moriscs and the depopulation in the XVI century. During the later centuries it suffered the attacks of the berberisc pirates. In second half of the XX century, thanks to the development of the tropical cultivation techniques and to the tourism, Ítrabo progresses economically.


Gastronomy

The wine is the protagonist in the gastronomy of this town. Their vineyards are considered of very good quality. They produce white wines with fruity flavour, golden in colour, suitable for the tapeo as much as for meals. Their fields produce cherimoyas, avocados and mangos. Its sausages also stand out.
