Freila is a town located in a fertile plain in which olive trees, fruit trees and white mulberries grow. Nevertheless, the orchard contrasts with the red dry soil and of the semi-deserted area that surrounds Freila. A beautiful natural place full of geographic contrasts, next to the Negratín reservoir, in which aquatic sports like kayaking, rowing or fishing can be practiced. Its town-planning stands out by its houses-cave, in which a good part of the population lives. The places of main interest are a massive tower of nine meters that belonged to an old medieval castle, several linen cloths of a wall and a parochial church of the XVI century dedicated to the invocation of Santa Maria of the Announcement.
At Roman time it received the name of Fraximun, according to explanations of Paschal Madoz. During the Reconquista, the rebellion of the Moorish and their later expulsion it was damaged. There are proofs of the inhabitancy of the caves at Muslim time, with one floor, or from Christian time with several floors.
It has wide homemade stew recipe book: gurullos, gachas or gurupina, and rich dessert like the twisted roll or cakes of chicharrones. The stews with fresh fish of the Negratín reservoir stand out as well. In addition, it is a great extra virgin olive oil producer.
