It is located next to the Barranco de las Zarzas. Chimeneas represents the south-western limit of the Fertile plain of Granada, from whose low part it is in fact separated by the Loma de Santa Catalina. It occupies a wide space of green shades of the strips of choperas and very cared cultivated fields, which they have like axis the Genil river in its calm flow towards the west, it enjoys so much its location in this fertile land like the proximity of the city of the Alhambra.
The origin of Chimeneas as population centre goes back to the Muslim time. It was born like a Nasrid farmhouse that lodged several families with the name of Dulla. It grew and gained importance and, after being conquered by the Catholic Kings, it became a cortijada dependant of Granada. In 1789 it was granted to it its own district. The famous earthquake of Alhama of 1884 and the one of Albolote of 1956 left tracks in numerous buildings of the town. The first one it ruined several houses completely and it damaged seriously the parochial church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario. The reconstruction was done with funds from a national subscription opened to help the victims.
In Chimneys barley, wheat and chick-peas of great quality are produced, that are famous protagonists of their “puchericos”. A common recipe that is accompanied with wine from the region is the chick-pea stew.
