Tourist information

Cúllar Vega is located in the heart of the Granada’s Fertile plain, in a district characterized by its masses of poplars. Due to its location it enjoys the advantages of the Genil and Dílar rivers, which is translated in productive land and well cared orchards. From its fertile land the poli-cultivation of cereals and beet stand out. Framed in the metropolitan area of Granada, the weather of the town offers to the visitor cold winters and dry and warm summers.

History

The history of this town has always been very linked to the one of the capital. It derives from the word collum, that is translated like "elevated land", and that is an indication of its existence as Roman villa. At Arab time it probably served as farmhouse or house of farming. During the Nasrid Kingdom, the population was dedicated to the irrigated land agriculture. After the Reconquista there were not great changes in the vicinities, until Felipe II expelled the Moorish from the town. In 1571 it was repopulated with settlers from other parts of the Kingdom and its space is marked, similar to the present one. The agriculture was the main economic engine with cultivations of irrigated land, vineyards and dry land, whereas the cattle had little presence. The population increased gradually until decades ago its census has grown considerably when becoming place for first and second residence.

Gastronomy

It is a town with excellent products of the orchard like the ones used to elaborate the rice with vegetables. To the fruits of agriculture we can add those coming from the cattle, with the derivatives of the pig like the black pudding and the sausage. The cod doughnuts and the meatballs are also present in its recipes. When the cold arrives, the neighbours of Cúllar fight it with the soup of maimones and the gachas of "cuscurrones" as much as the hot gachas. The typical pastry making of Cúllar Vega has plenty of pestiños, torrijas, fried twisted rolls and natillas.
