Cenes de la Vega is located in the central area of the province, only 5 kilometres from Granada’s capital and laying on the slope of a mount at the shore of the Genil River. This town is part of the journey of the Route of Münzer, one of the routes of Al-Andalus impelled by El Legado Andalusi. Also known as Royal road, it linked Almeria with Granada through territories of the interior. In addition to being town-bedroom of the capital, during the week-ends it is one of the most selected destinies by the citizens of Granada and the foreigners to enjoy its surroundings, its nature and, mainly, its rich and traditional gastronomy at its many restaurants and picnic areas. Another type of tourist offer for the summer, is the aquatic park that the town of Cenes de la Vega has. The location and the places that frame the town make it ideal for the excursion and the rest in the shade of the poplars and wickers that decorate it.
The origin of Cenes de la Vega as town is dated in 1572, according to the local archive. Nevertheless, it already existed at Arab time, but its inhabitants only moved there when they had to produce silk, living in Granada the rest of the year. There are some people who explain its foundation because of the proximity to the already disappeared Casa Fuerte, called Dar to the Ouet at Nasrid time. It was an Arab palace located next to the Genil, in the outskirts of the capital. Some graves of Moorish origin have also been found on land of the Venta neighbourhood, where clay vessels have appeared, although what it has been dated lately it is its existence in 1572. Since the second half of the XX century a considerable demographic increase took place, when it received inhabitants from other points of the province and becomes a town-bedroom for many people.
Land of excellent tomatoes, potatoes, onions and peppers that are usually cooked in recipes like estofaillo of meat. It is also very appreciated the wide variety of sausages, the black pudding and the sausage standing out. The district houses some of the best restaurants of the province.
