Tourist information

This town is located in the right margin of the Cacín river, which in its way down from the Bermejales reservoir forms one of the most interesting fluvial gorges of the Penibética mountain range. It is part of the northern slope of the Tejeda Mountain range, a great mass of brown-reddish stone surrounded by vineyards, tejos and pine groves. Cacín is a small and calm town where to enjoy nature only 25 minutes away from Granada.

History

The Geographic Dictionary of Madoz says that the foundation of Cacín, like the one of its village attached El Turro, "dates from the last years of the last century" talking about the XVIII century. Even so, there are more than enough data to talk about its existence as population centre at least since medieval time. Its name comes apparently from Abul Kasim, familiar name of  “distinguished and influential people”. Its history has been bound to Alhama of Granada from Muslim time. It was conquered by the Catholic Kings in their Christianization campaign which culminated in 1492. In the XIX century it suffered the presence of the Napoleonic troops during the French invasion. After the confiscation it was property of the Government, but in 1836 it was acquired as national property by a neighbour of the city of Alhama. In 1884 the earthquake that knocked down the region destroyed great part of the area.

Gastronomy

In Cacín cereals, vegetables and fruits are produced. It has a rooted cuisine tradition as it is demonstrated in the celebrations of August, when the people go to the fields to make their “merendicas” with migas, rice and homemade sausages. In addition, the Cacín river offers excellent salmon type fishes, like the trout with which the typical oven bake trouts are elaborated.
