Tourist information

Armilla, placed in the Granada’s fertile plain, enjoys a Mediterranean climate, humid and temper, with dry and warm summers and almost 3,000 hours of sun per year. Due to its proximity to Granada, Armilla is a good place to spend the night, to enjoy its terraces and to visit the capital. As unequivocal sign of its development, within its district it houses an air base of the Air Force that includes a School of Pilots for helicopters. It also welcomes the enclosure of the Feria de Muestras, in the old facilities of the sugar factory of Santa Juliana.

The new Technological Park of Health Sciences also occupies part of its district. In the middle of its construction process, this complex is a public initiative of diverse administrations and institutions to turn Granada and its South belt into vanguard of teaching, investigation and the technology in health affairs.

History

Its origin is even previous to the Roman domination of the area, but the first vestiges that are conserved are Arab and that is the time in which the history of Armilla starts to be known. During the years of the Caliphate the canals of the fertile plain were built and the district begins to bloom economically. The production of great cultivations and being land of passage for the merchants of the silk granted an outstanding role to it in the Kingdom of Granada. Although between the XI and XIII centuries there were in Armilla already important craftsmen, it did not reach great development until the end of the XV century. Its prosperity was broken by the war of Granada and turn into decay by the Moorish revolt. With the town depopulated and the fields of irrigated land devastated in 1574 it was repopulated by old Castilians.

Gastronomy

Traditional in the gastronomy of Armilla is the San Antón pot, the pumpkin pisto, the stuffed aubergines, varied soups and fried beans with jam. The hunting meat is also part of the recipes of this town, with examples like the rabbit a la labradora and the partridges with cabbage.
