It is located next to the tail of the reservoir in whose shores La Colonia neighbourhood rises. Fornes can presume to have housed between its walls the King Alfonso XII, who spent the night in the rooms of an old flour mill of this town during his visit to the region in January of 1885.
The town is of medieval origin and appears mentioned with the name of Fórnex in the work of the geographer from Loja Al-Jatib, where it appears as “place of the district with baluarte”. Of this one, mentioned as Hisn Sojaira, the "Castle of the Small Rock", they do not remain, nevertheless, visible rests that make possible its location. In the outskirts of Fornes is the famous estate of La Resinera, one of the most productive forest and wood complexes of Andalucia.
