Tourist information

"The surroundings of Granada do not have comparison in the entire Universe; they constitute a space of 40 miles, cut by the famous Chennil or Genil, and other numerous rivers. The gardens, the orchards, the prairies or the cultivated fields, the castles and the vineyards surround Granada throughout." Víznar is between these "surroundings" mentioned by Ibn Battuta.

The town is located near the capital, at 1,074 meters of altitude, the highest of the region, inside the Natural Park of the Huétor Mountain range. The Plaza de la Constitucion or Plaza Noguera concentrates the best artistic historical patrimony of the town; in its flanks align the City council, the parochial church, the Palacio del Cuzco and some of the best examples of the domestic architecture of Víznar.

Due to its proximity is interesting the visit to the  Visitors Centre and the Cinegetic Park of the Natural Park of Huétor Mountain range; there is a viewpoint from where magnificent views of Sierra Nevada can be contemplated.

History

Its origin is Arab and its birth is linked to the water conduction from the Fuente de Aynadamar to the Granada’s Albayzin, by the creation of a framework of drains. By its privileged situation, good climate and the purity of water it has been the place chosen by the rich families of the city of Granada as a second house where to stay in the summer. Also it was chosen by the archbishops of Granada, as it demonstrates the Palace of Cuzco, its construction ordered by the archbishop Moscoso y Peralta.

Víznar was one of the last villas in fall into the hands of the Catholic Kings, it surrenders in 1491. It suffered the rebellion of the Moorish, and after their expulsion in the XVI century it had to be partially repopulated.

In 1936 it linked its history forever with the one of the poet and dramatist Federico Garcia Lorca, shot between Alfacar and Víznar. The poet and dramatist spent his last hours locked up in La Colonia, a building next to the Aynadamar canal and already disappeared, but which tracks are still visible halfway the road to the known ravine where the condemned to death were shot in the beginnings of the Civil War. Today an olive tree grows in the place where it is believed Federico is buried.

Gastronomy

In this town, like in its neighbour Alfacar, the bread elaborated in multiple ways stand out in its gastronomy. The volaillos, barriguitas de vieja and the nochebuenos are good also. Accompanied by its homemade bread, typical dishes like the pot of San Antón, the menúo, the lamb legs and known as molinero stew can be tasted. To these recipes, we can add other traditional in Víznar like gachas, the derivatives of the pig and the collejas omelette. For dessert, it is necessary to leave room for stuffed pastries and the almond pies.
