Tourist information

It is a town located in the northwest of the Granada province, next to the La Sagra mountain range. It is a town bordering with the Jaén, Albacete, Murcia and Almeria provinces. Its places of interest are the parochial church of Santa Maria de la Quinta Angustia, of the XVI century, or the House of the Patiños family. Puebla de Don Fadrique offers the possibility to practice trekking in the natural places of Las Santas, Collados de Arriba, Casa de la Virgen or Cortijos Nuevos. Almaciles is a small town of this district. A village located to more than 1,100 meters of altitude between mountains and plains, at the base of the La Sagra mountain range. It is the first Andalusian town if you travel from the East through the Jumilla-Calasparra-Caravaca route in the direction towards Granada. Puebla de Don Fadrique celebrates two celebrations that stand out by its interest and by the great number of people who agglutinate: the romería of the saints Alodía and Nunilón, and the cascaborras, that is celebrated at Christmas.

History

With important archaeological rests of Iberian-Roman and Muslim times, in the XIII and XIV centuries this place belonged to a border strip where diverse confrontations between Muslims and Christians took place. At those times the present Puebla de Don Fadrique was not more than a small village formed by a handful of settlers or group of numerous watchtowers. The town owes its present name to the second Duke of Alba, Don Fadrique de Toledo, who baptized it this way in 1525. Previously, it was called Place of the Bolteruela. The town was annexed to the Crown of Castile and the Catholic Kings gave it as estate to Don Fadrique. After the revolution and later expulsion of the Moorish, Puebla was repopulated by settlers coming from Navarra.

Gastronomy

The vianda, recipe introduced by the Navarra’s settlers, stands out.. Other typical dishes are the partridges to the chocolate, the migas, garlic of aserrador, andrajos, gueñas, fried cakes or ajo arriero. Besides, it has inlays and derivatives from the pig of great quality.
