Tourist information

Lújar is located on the slope of the steep mountain range which it shares name with. This town stands out by its white silhouette 520 meters of altitude over the sea level, towards its blue intense looks in the direction of Alborán.

The own town and the essential stroll through its streets constitute an enough satisfaction reason for the visitor. Worthy to admire it is the disposition of the houses of the town, unfolded in the way of an amphitheatre under the shade of the dark and impressive mass of the Lújar Mountain range. The ascent to this mountain range, by the asphalted track that arrives to the summit, is one of the most advisable excursions. It is, nevertheless, an ascent that admits the topic of non-apt for people with heart problems, due to the narrowness of the road and to the steep and winding hill.


History

Its origin goes back to the Phoenician time, remaining from this settlement millenarian olive trees of the picual variety. Its name comes from the word luxar, which means great stones, making reference to the Lújar Mountain range. Its urban framework of narrow streets and the structure of its houses with the classic “tinao” or small vestibule constitutes a legacy of the Islamic period. This district suffered a depopulation process as a result of the Reconquista that it was partially solved several decades later. It belonged then to the Órgiva taha, changing later on, to be territory of the count of Santa Coloma.

In the XVIII century it experienced a development in the cultivation of the grapevine and the mining caused by a new colonization. Nowadays it has, in addition to the main core of Lújar, three anejos: Los Carlos, Venta de Lújar and Playa de Cambriles.


Gastronomy

Migas and choto are elaborated in multiple ways. The orza back is one of the most characteristic specialties, next to the zalamandroña - a stew of sardines and pumpkin -, the fennel stew and the fig bread.
