Tourist information

Churriana de la Vega is nailed between green choperas and the calm flow of the Genil River, in the Granada’s Fertile plain, only 7 kilometres from the city of the Alhambra. This town keeps an interesting historical-artistic legacy, beginning by the Arab baths and followed by the centenary Via Crucis and its old laundry. This stamp and its agricultural tradition conferred to Churriana the qualifying with the name from its neighbours of "paradise of the fertile valley". In addition its many squares and gardens work as a lung for the town, enrich its places of leisure and relaxation, and print character in its urban aspect.

in this town Salvador Sanchez Povedano was born in 1842, better known as “Frascuelo”, one of the most legendary bullfighters that the Spanish bullfighting squares have seen.

History

There are not written news of Churriana de la Vega until the XIV century, when the writer of the time Ibn al-Jatib mentions it in his manuscripts. Thus, the first historical written sources are from the Middle Age, time at which it is a farmhouse. This town was place of numerous warlike ripples during the creation of the Nasrid Kingdom due to its proximity to Granada. Between the XIII and XIV centuries, the town lives a period of economic expansion, based on the agricultural production and the industries. But the war of Granada and the battles of the Reconquest affected Churriana, until its definitive surrender to the Catholic Kings.

In this population it took place an important episode of the history of the Nasrid Kingdom as it was the interview between the delegations of Boabdil and the Catholic Kings. In this meeting they dealt the terms of the Capitulations for the delivery of Granada. In 1510 it appears the name of Jurliana and Jurriana in parochial books, from where the present denomination could be derived, being mentioned for the first time in 1520. The invasion carried out by the French troops in the XIX century restrained the growth of the town, although, once its occupants left the fertile plain, the recovery of Churriana began.

Gastronomy

It is a land of substantial fruits and vegetables that are present in recipes like the cabbage stew and migas of bread. From its pastry making, the torrijas, the twisted rolls, the pestiños and the fried milk stand out.
