Lugros

Tourist informationHistoryGastronomy

Located at over 1200 meters above sea level at the head of the Río Alhama, Lugros is a mountain town with narrow, steep streets that converge at the main square. The Dehesa del Camarate, situated at one of the highest points in the municipality at the foot of the Picón de Jérez, is currently the only place devoted exclusively to breeding bulls in the province of Granada. This farm is entirely within the reserve area of the Parque Natural de Sierra Nevada.

Although its Prehistoric economy was based on mining, its place name does not refer to any of the metals that the Romans mined, but rather to the wolves that at that time inhabited the area in large numbers. The Latin word ‘lupus’ means ‘wolf’. The town’s name later changed to Luberos, then Lubros and now Lugros. From the 8th century onwards the Arabs occupied this area and during the Moorish period this town was a large farmstead dependent on Beas de Guadix. In 1489 it was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs, after which it was gradually repopulated by Christians.

The locals grow their own grapes and make their own wine. Olives, almonds and grains such as oats and barley are also grown here. The typical dish is the Potaje de San Marcos, made of chickpeas and cod. Another popular dish is Chachina (marinated pork made with sausages and other meats) with roasted potatoes and local wine.
