Formed because of the erosion caused by the Río Alhama, Los Tajos de Alhama reaches a depth of over 50 meters.
Los Tajos de Alhama consists of a set of sandstone canyons and gorges formed by the erosive activity of the Río Alhama and of rock formations that occurred as a result of several earthquakes. This is a beautiful and interesting natural site, of historical and ethnographic great interest. Alhama was one of the symbols of the Christian conquest of the Kingdom of Granada, and around Los Tajos several monuments were built. For the poet Theophile Gautier, the town seemed to be “hanging from an enormous rock“. This geological marvel is just as fascinating and beautiful as the Moorish and Christian found in the centre of town.
The Camino de los Angeles is one of the paths that leads to the very centre of Los Tajos. The streets and buildings disappear to make way for the natural beauties of Alhama. Immersed in the Parque Natural de la Sierra Tejeda, de la Almijara and de la Alhama Los Tajos it provides an idyllic and refreshing landscape.
