Only the ruins of this castle remain. It is built on a rocky promontory overlooking the town and located at about 300 metres above sea level, on a steep slope that is difficult to access. Its location was superb, because it dominated the landscape and the road to La Alpujarra as well as the road that led from Granada to the coast. The castle was surrounded by a wall flanked by two great stone towers – one to the north, and the other to the south. The former was semi-circular, and the latter, the Torre del Homenaje, contained a cistern that still exists today.
