This is one of the oldest gateways. It led into the citadel, and gave access to the inner section of the fortified upper Alhambra.
Since 1556, the inhabitants of the Alhambra left at this gate the wine they drank that was not submitted to taxation. This is one explanation which makes clear where the name of the gateway came from, although another theory exists which says the name is the result of mixing up two similar sounding words. Its non- military character explains the ornate decoration.
